I wrote this poem to express how volunteering (especially at church) can burn people out just because they are too afraid to say “No” when they are asked to help. In turn, those who ask for volunteers should not judge those who are on the brink of burning out or spread to thin. God doesn’t want your leftovers.
How sure is your sure
Our no is yes
And yes I know
I’m busy
But I tie one more tether
and back and forth I go
I dither
Double-minded between certain
and guess
I’m dizzy
Now no is the answer
with regret
but honest
Check my heart
It’s checked out
Woe is me
Lesson learned
Yes be yes
No be no
“Sure”
by flippant tongue
is not so sure at all
And if it were
at its best
“Sure” is nothing more
than just a hesitant yes.
